How can the CUSN Support Line help you?

The CUSN Support Line is a free, confidential telephone service available to anyone working in adult, further or higher education. Our trained advisors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and offer impartial support and advice.

Daniel called the Support Line for help with his workload which was creating pressure at work and at home. He was feeling completely stressed out, unable to sleep properly and becoming irritable with his family.

As a newly qualified lecturer, Daniel felt he had to impress his employer and was taking on more and more work to try and do this.

When Daniel called the College and University Line he was feeling very overwhelmed by his work and didn’t know where to turn. His love for his job was disappearing and he was at the point where he wanted to leave.

Daniel’s coach helped him to focus and to identify what he thought the core issue could be. It emerged that as he wanted to impress his employer his ability to say no to increasing work and responsibility had disappeared.

Working together, Daniel and his coach reasoned that, far from being sacked, his employers would rather he was able to do his job with the enthusiasm he had when employed than sink under the heavy workload he’d taken on. They also discussed what a reasonable workload would be and how to approach his manager in a useful and productive way. The coach also gave tips on how to say no to additional work in the future.

Daniel returned to work the following day with a positive approach rather than dreading the work waiting for him.
